10 Road Trip Essentials You Do Not Want To Forget

Whether you’re about to embark on a sightseeing trip, move across the country, or head to a far-away destination, road trips can be the most enjoyable way to travel. But with such a long way to go, you absolutely cannot forget any of these ten essentials before you take off.

1. Technology

Technology has largely replaced things like maps and payphones so it is so important to bring your cell phone along with a car- or solar-powered phone charger. Load your phone with GPS and road trip apps to keep you on track, and to point out the great sights along the way!

2. Accommodations

Whether you’re driving through New York City, the deserts of southern Utah, Toronto, or Fort McMurray, hotels are an absolute essential. Plan ahead: research good hotels in the areas you will most likely hit at night, and check their cancellation policies in case you need to stop before you make it to that evening’s destination.

3. Clothing

Pack comfy, stretchy clothes for your trip that you can wear for a long time but can also wear to see sights or eat out. Don’t forget to pack the clothing and toiletries you will need once you arrive at your destination as well. And you will be grateful to have remembered your sunglasses while driving those long hours under the hot sun.

4. Safety Necessities

Before leaving, get a tune up on your car. There’s nothing worse than a breakdown mid-trip. Also consider getting an AAA membership, just in case. Pick up an emergency pack (they come pre-prepared but usually contain flashlights, road flares, spare tire kit, jumper cables), some extra batteries, and a spare tire. Hand a co-driver a spare set of keys in case something happens to yours.

5. Proper Documentation

No person should take a trip without double-checking for all the paperwork they need: especially their license, registration, and passport.

6. Comfort and Hygiene Items

The road warriors at Apartment Therapy have the good sense to remember the little things (that go a LONG way) like hand sanitizer, Band-Aids, Tylenol, Tums, any prescriptions you might need, and paper products (like paper towels, tissues, and yes even toilet paper). Don’t forget your snuggly throw and a soft pillow for napping!

7. Snacks

A road trip is about nothing if it’s not about the food. You are sure to get some interesting meals as you make your way across the country, but for those times you can’t have one more greasy burger or when the stretches between tasty restaurants go on too long a good supply of healthy snacks will do the trick: pack granola, fruit, water bottles, and other natural treats.

8. Entertainment

Looking at the sights alongside the highway can only keep you entertained for so long. Pack your iPad, a deck of cards, some favorite books (some on tape!), headphones for those who want to watch movies in the back seat, and of course load your phone with endless playlists of your favorite jams to rock out to.

9. Planned Itinerary

It’s always smart to have an itinerary: complete with rest stops, a schedule for changing drivers, and when and where you will eat. Print this out in case someone “forgets” it’s their shift to drive one early morning.

10. Good Travel Companions

Your best friends will make the experience one you never forget!

Now that you’ve gathered the road trip essentials, you are ready to drive off on an adventure. Don’t forget to take pictures along the way!
