5 Easy ways to Make your Skin Healthy

Your skin, particularly your face, is exposed to the weather on a daily basis. If it’s sunny then it’s getting pelted with UV rays that increase the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, and if it’s cold the wind dries your skin out and increases the likelihood of chapped, flaky skin. It doesn’t matter what you try, nothing seems to improve its appearance at all. There’s good news, we have put together five easy ways to keep your skin healthy.

1. Quit Smoking

This is the biggest favor you can do to your skin. If you’re a smoker then it’s time to stop. We won’t even go into how expensive a habit it is now or mention how it shortens your lifespan and increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and cancer. No, we are focused solely on what it’s doing to your skin! Cancer sticks are so packed with chemicals and toxins that they are aging you rapidly. How is that possible? Well, it narrows the blood vessels in the outer epidermis decreasing the blood flow. Effectively, this starves your skin of the nutrients and oxygen that it needs to remain healthy. That’s just for starters – it also damages the production of collagen. Now, think of the face you typically make as you smoke… you narrow your eyes, you purse your lips… you repeat these gestures frequently, causing wrinkles. 

2. Diet & Hydration

Food nourishes your body and your skin and you really are what you eat. So, if you are plagued by terrible skin, it may be time to have a look at your diet. Are you eating things that are healthy and provide your body with fuel? Or, are you guilty of indulging in things that are more likely to fuel acne? It’s okay to treat yourself now and then, but a healthy diet is vital to the health of your skin. This isn’t about dieting, though, this is about leading a healthy lifestyle. So, make sure that your diet contains plenty of lean proteins, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables. Reduce your intake of unhealthy fats, refined carbohydrates and increase your Vitamin C consumption to have better younger-looking skin.

In addition to eating a healthy diet, it’s also important that you are properly hydrating. Yes, water is your best friend! You shouldn’t wait until you’re parched to have a glass of water – you should sip it regularly throughout the day and avoid ever feeling thirsty. Not sure how much water to drink? Weigh yourself and then halve your weight – drink that number in ounces on a daily basis for optimum health. 

3. Exfoliate

What could be more important to healthy skin than regular exfoliation? How regularly will depend entirely on what skin type you have, but generally it is anywhere from once a week up to three times. The purpose of exfoliation is to remove all of the dead skin cells which have accumulated and reveal the soft and smooth skin that is hiding beneath. Of course, that also means it should prevent blackheads and acne problems, too. Additionally, it boosts circulation which will improve your skin’s appearance. Just be sure to use a gentle scrub for your face (and any other gentle areas), but use a coarse scrub on your knees and elbows and go for broke. 

4. Moisturize

You can’t exfoliate and then ignore your skin, you need to replenish it! Moisturizers don’t provide your skin with more moisture, they’re trick is to seal in the moisture once you have finished bathing. So, this should be your habit from now on. As soon as you hop out the shower or bath and dry off get the moisturizer out and give yourself a good lather. You will need to buy a separate moisturizer for your face and body.

For an extra boost, place a warm, damp cloth over your face to open up the pores before you moisturize. This will provide your face with the opportunity to soak the moisturizer in. 

5. Protect Yourself

Sun causes wrinkles and age spots and sharply increases your risk of skin cancer, so it only makes sense to ensure you are protected from its harmful rays.

The first step to achieving this is by wearing sunscreen every day in life. Always choose at least SPF15 and apply it generously. If you are particularly active and sweat a lot (or you’re in and out of water) then you need to reapply it hourly, but it should be reapplied every couple of hours otherwise (particularly if you are spending all of your time outdoors). Get to know the sun’s strongest times where you live and avoid it during those times. Typically, this is between 10 am and 2 pm, so if you have to be outside, then you should stick to the shade.
