Accessorizing your Mountain Bike for Hunting Trips

Last updated on December 13, 2015

Using mountain bikes for hunting is a new but interesting idea. Bikes are ideal for hunters when moving around forest paths and trails. While hiking might take you a long time to get to your destination, bikes offer a faster alternative. There are many companies which offer hunting bikes as a separate product but we feel that with the right accessorizing, normal mountain bikes will make an effective hunting vehicle. Here is a look at some of the changes you can bring about to your mountain bike to make it ideal for hunting trips.

1. The last thing you need is a bike which breaks down in the mountains. A good way to prevent this is to ensure that the tires have thorn proof inner tubes. Also make sure you carry an optimized tool kit which contains repair tools, bike wrenches and a chain repair kit. It will be helpful to keep all these items in a bag which can be attached under the seat.

2. Make sure that the rear end rack is sturdy and stable. It can be used to carry your extra cargo and might even be useful while transporting meat. Going for a hunting trip will mean that you will have quite a bit of luggage to carry around. These will include your essential toiletries, shooting equipment and perhaps even a sleeping bag. So it is important that you have a rear rack that will be able to withstand this high load.

3. It will also be helpful if the bike has a front fender. Mountain paths can get quite dirty and the fender will prevent mud from splashing on to your face and hands. It will be especially useful in rainy weather. Also try getting handle bars which will be comfortable on your arms and shoulders. There are many bar ends designed specifically for this purpose and it wouldn’t be a bad idea to invest in one of these.

4. Toe straps are also a good option for mountain bikes. These make it easier to transfer energy through the pedals and are helpful on long distance bike rides. They do take some time to get used to though, and is really a personal choice. A helmet is also not really necessary while riding mountain bikes. You will never really be going at very high speeds so the chances of accidents are highly minimal. But if you feel safer and more comfortable with a helmet on, then feel free to use one.

5. As far as lights for the bike are concerned, a LED head lamp might be far more useful that the traditional handle bar lighting. These offer far better light, especially at night and most hunters do seem to prefer them.

6. There are also many mountain bikes that have front end carry racks. Though these might seem like an innovative idea, the problem is that front suspension becomes an issue due to the increased load. This can prove hazardous on mountain trails. If you do have a front end rack, make sure that only light baggage is placed on it.
