How To Deal With Flight Layovers

Last updated on December 14, 2015

Flight layovers are a traveler’s worst nightmare. People often dread six hours waiting in an airport where there is nothing for them to do but wait for their flight to move on. It’s annoying and the end result will leave the weary traveler exhausted and so tired that there will be nothing left to do but collapse when it’s all over.

But during a layover, there is nothing left for the traveler to do but wait for it to be over. And how best to make the waiting experience something that isn’t a necessary problem? The answer is simple. Make it a fun experience instead of waiting for the unpleasant hours to pass without being noticed. Flipping through magazines and tapping on your phone can only do so much. There are a few other things that are easy to do and are guaranteed to make time fly even if the flight is not.

Work out

If the thought of working out before others does not bother you, then kudos to you! Get into shape with a couple of stretches to get your blood running. It will help in circulation and in passing the time. It is recommended that the airport be consulted to see if it offers gym facilities or if there are any close by. If not, nothing but a pair of sweats can make it easier for you to jog around the airport and pass time. However, make sure that the airport offers showering facilities.

Leave the Airport

If you have more time on your hands and the city you are staying in offers a good public transport service, then leave the airport behind and see what the city had to offer. Larger cities with good transport are punctual so there will be no fear of losing your flight even if you do spend a few free hours exploring the city. It helps to get out of the area and change the scenery around, makes time pass quicker.

Get Lodging

If the long flight has left you tired and exhausted, and the thought of sleeping in public makes it hard for you to actually sleep, get lodging. It is not hard to find a hotel, but with the hotel comes the unnecessary cost and spending that you can avoid by booking an apartment in the city. Many cities offer people a chance to rent out the apartment for the few hours needed to sleep. Places like apartments in Edinburgh, offer people a chance to unwind and sleep in peace without the fear of missing the flight if they doze off for too long.

Layover flights are one of the lengthier and frustrating experiences that a traveler faces. Finding ways to make time pass is difficult but when you know what to do, it becomes easier to bear the waiting. By distracting yourself enough and not think of the time it takes for the layover to end, a person makes it easier on themselves. More importantly, through this you will be available to enjoy some hours of well deserved peace.
