Difference between Public, Private & State Private Universities

Last updated on January 7, 2020

Everyone is talking about public or private universities and you have no idea about the difference between them. Or maybe you’ve just understood the difference between public and private universities, enough to explain and differentiate it for your friends and then someone comes along and tells you that UPES is a public-private university, and you have no idea what that is? Don’t worry, I’ll explain all three.

First, let’s look at the key differences between public and private universities. The most important difference between them is how they’re funded and does the funding of a university make a difference? The source of a university’s funding does make a difference, as the funding is tied to other factors including the tuition fee, the university infrastructure and facilities and so on.

So, since the State Government oversees the funding of most of the public institutions, this inflow of public money is why their tuition fee will be comparatively lower. On the other hand, private universities rely heavily on private contributions and tuition fees so their tuition fee would be comparatively higher.

Another major difference is that public universities have reservation quotas (SC/ST/OBC) and follow strict reservation policies. The private universities which are affiliated to government universities will have reservation quotas but purely private institutions won’t have any quota.

What are state private institutions or public-private institutions?

State private universities are almost like private universities. They’re managed by a private entity and cannot affiliate an institution/college. The university won’t have a reservation quota but will have a quota for the citizens residing in the same state.

Let’s take UPES as an example since it’s India’s first public-private university. UPES doesn’t follow the reservation quota (SC/ST/OBC) but has a quota for the Uttarakhand domicile students.

The university is privately owned by the Hydrocarbons Education & Research Society but in terms of faculty and other criteria, it is no less than any government college. UPES even conducts its own exam known as UPSEAT

Which type of University is the best?

Finally, the ultimate question arises of which is the best of the three? And this is where it is important to understand that there is no definite best option among the three. Portals like GetMyUni will give you the information about all education related details.

You should choose a college based on your career plan, goals, and after considering the costs and the environment. This also makes it essential not to choose a university, just based on where your friends or peers are going. A student has to go through the colleges which offer his/ her interested course and know all the details about placements, infrastructure etc. If any student is unable to attain education due to financial issues, there are few colleges in India which offer scholarships/ waiver on tuition fees.

So as students trying to find the right college, it’ll be helpful to refer to online portals like GetMyUni where you can get the information and details regarding a lot of colleges to analyze and compare them and finally choose the right one for you, regardless of it is a public, private or state private university.
