In India we are following the new Trade Marks Act established in 1999. You can use different types of marks for promoting brands, goods or services.

Certification mark is one type of Trademark Registration that is used to define standards. This mark is used while doing quality checks, quantity checks or any certification procedure. From the design of the mark we can understand the type of certification received for a particular set of standard procedure. All types of goods have to undergo different quality checks. In the certification stage a particular type of certification mark is used to mark the quality or standard of the product.

In the service industry we can use service mark as a trademark. Some of the areas where service mark is commonly used include hotel business, telecom business, software business, hardware business, advertising, transport, courier, education, health care, beauty etc. One can select a trademark that suits the behaviour of the business or the brand name.

A group of private institutions or other associations can use collective marks. This is a type of trademark registration that can help public in identifying a group of institutions, public organizations or a particular association. Best example for this is Reliance group of companies. Collective mark helps in recognizing a particular type of product or institution.

You can use sound marks, color marks, shape marks and smell marks as trademarks. These types of trademarks registration are called unconventional trademarks as they can be clearly distinguished from other trademarks.
