Chandigarh is a nice destination for a weekend. It is a city full of many attractions. You can explore the city and move on to other famous destinations in the hills which are very close to Chandigarh. Read on to know more.

Chandigarh is a nice place for an outstation trip with family or friends. This city of Punjab offers a number of attractions which provide a recreational and refreshing experience.

Chandigarh is India’s first planned city and hence it is highly organized. You would not find the encroachments and traffic snarls that are now a common sight in any modern city. Since it is near to Delhi, it makes for a perfect weekend destination. It also is the gateway to many hill stations, such as Shimla, Manali, and Dharamshala.

If you want to know about some Chandigarh famous places, here are some popular attractions:

Rock Garden – Chandigarh is also known as the city of gardens. There are many exquisite gardens in the city which you would like to explore. Rock Garden is one of those. It is a legendary garden located near Sukhna Lake. It is a sculpture garden and was founded by Nek Chand. He was a government official who used to work on carving out the attractions of this garden in his spare time. Until 1975, his passion remained a secret and the government did not know about this place, nor about his hobby and art. The unique garden has several causeways that link to the nearby lake. You would see many sculptures of animals, dancers, and musicians here. The garden also showcases several pottery arts.

Rock Garden

Rose Garden – This is also known as Zakir Hussain Rose Garden and it is spread in 30 acres. It is the largest botanical garden of its type in the whole Asia. Besides the roses, you can also find out several medicinal herbs that are grown here.

Pinjore Garden – It is also called Yadavindra Garden. This is a historic garden as it was built by a Nawab who reigned under Emperor Aurangzeb. Maharaja Yadavindra of the state of Patiala saw the expansion and re-decoration of the garden. The whole place exhibits the essence of Mughal and Rajasthani styles of architecture.

Cactus Garden
– Stretched in an area of 7 acres, this garden has 3,500 varieties of cacti. A large number of tourists and botanist visit this garden.

Doll Museum – This international museum has dolls from more than 25 countries. The museum was established in 1985 and it is taken of by Indian Council of Child Welfare. The main attraction is the toy train.

Art Gallery and Museum
– From Dinosaur fossils to historical coins to artefacts from the excavation of Indus Valley civilization, the Museum and Art Gallery of Chandigarh has an interesting collection of antiquities. It is a must visit for an insight into the past.

Cricket Stadium of Mohali – This is an interesting place for some recreation if you like cricket. Mohali stadium was built in 1993 and it is one of the best cricket stadiums of India.

– This zoological park has a diversity of animals, birds, and reptiles that you can see. The zoo also provides a lion safari which is an exciting adventure to experience.

Terraced Garden
– This is again a botanical garden spread in an area of 10 acres. It is a serene spot for picnic and excursion. You can enjoy the quiet here in the foothills of Himalayan Shivalik range. It was established in 1979.

Le Corbusier – Le Corbusier designed the planning of Chandigarh city. At the Le Corbusier building he used to keep his office. Now it is a museum which showcases his work.

You can explore other cities of India which offer a great holiday experience. After Chandigarh you can head to Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh. You can take a direct Chandigarh to Bhopal train for your travel.
