Luggage Packing Tips

Last updated on November 28, 2015

Knowing the right way to pack your luggage can help you save a lot of space and make your travel easy. Choosing the right of luggage bag (taking into consideration its features, design, functionality, etc.) that suits your need is also vital. Here are some packing tips that I hope will help you. It is divided into 3 segments for the purpose of simplification:

What to pack:

  • Clothes to wear out- Consider the duration of your tour. The number of clothes, shoes or other items to be taken will depend on that. If you are going for a vacation, you would want to take the best of your clothes. But don’t take too many as that will make your bag heavy and you will find difficulty in moving it. If it is a business tour, take your business suits, ties, overcoats, and other necessary items (all properly washed and well pressed).
  • To wear at home- Now take out your clothes that you wear at home (to wear in hotel).
  • Cosmetics and the like- Now take out your cosmetics, toothbrush, toothpaste, and other like items and keep them in a separate place.
  • Electronics- Keep your mobile charger, laptop and laptop charger, hair dryer, camera and camera charger, and other electronic items which you will be taking.
  • Shoes- Take shoes you will be wearing outside and a pair for wearing in the hotel room.
  • Cash- Consider how much money you will be taking. It is advisable not to take all money in cash. Keep credit and debit cards with you.
  • Medicines- If there are medicines that you take regularly, take them out. Besides, take medicines that you might need in the journey, like medicines for headaches, digestion problems, stomach problem and other common problems.
  • Tickets and documents- Take your tickets, identity card, or other documents that you might need.

How to pack:

  • Divide your bag into 3 layers. Place heavy and hard items like shoes, hair dryer, etc in the bottom layer. Place small and light items like handkerchiefs or T- shirts in between them so that all space is properly utilized.
  • Place larger clothing items in the second layer.
  • Place things that you will need in the journey in the third and topmost layer. Items that can break or spill must also be placed in this layer so that other things can put pressure on them. You can also place fragile items within the fold of your clothes which will act as a cushion.
  • If your luggage has an expandable internal zipper, pack your unwashed clothes in them while returning.
  • Put liquids in external pockets of your luggage so that you can easily take them out while security screening.

On your way:

  • Wear your heaviest clothing, like boots, jackets, jeans (provided you are comfortable wearing them for the journey) on the way as that will save your space in the luggage.
  • You can take cosmetics (like your body spray, cream, etc.), music player, and other things that you might need on your way in a handbag.
  • Reach early for your check- in (when you are travelling by flight). Whether you can take your luggage bag with you or keep it in the luggage counter will depend on the Carry on Luggage Size.
