The Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education holds immense importance in the state of Maharashtra, India for setting the standards for technical education in the respective fields of diploma, advanced diploma, and post diploma courses in some of the most prestigious affiliated institutes of the state. Keeping in mind the ever-rising demands for high-level affiliated educational institutes and respective candidates for them, the Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education was set up in 1963. The history of the setting up of a separate state board which was responsible for imparting higher education dates back to as many as 60 years.

Before India gained independence from the British rule, several diploma courses that existed in the fields of Engineering & Technology had been offered reputed institutions like the Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (Mumbai), College of Engineering (Pune), Government Polytechnic (Nagpur), and Cusrow Wadia Institute of Technology (Pune). A proper Directorate of Technical Education had been established in 1948. This was set up with the intent of controlling the technical education across different levels of the course structure.

Due to the rapid increase in the industrial development, the need for the diploma courses escalated as well. As such, the government set up an individual Board of Technical Examinations in 1963. This was later named as the MSBTE (Maharashtra State Board of Technical Education) which was given an autonomous reputation in the year 1999.
