Rediscover the ‘City of Gardens’

Last updated on March 18, 2017

Bangalore is home to over 10 million people and the third most populous city in Asia. Due to its cosmopolitan nature, the garden city is well-loved by migrants from all over the country and though many come as students or employees, they choose to stay back and become a part of the city’s growing multitude.

Now, when you adopt a city, it’s almost like having a love affair. In the beginning, there are new things to know, new places to see, and you are happy every day. As time passes by, boredom sets in and you can start to wonder about your weekends and off-days. The ‘what do I do today?’ question can get harder to answer. Unless, of course, you choose to travel off the beaten path and rediscover your home city. You never know what hidden gems you might unearth that may answer your dilemma about Bangalore things to do.

Biking Safari through the Sholay Village

Bollywood’s magnum opus Sholay was shot in a small village right outside Bangalore. The current trend for offbeat travellers in the city is to take a biking safari through this village. The untainted routes of Ramanagaram – the famous village depicted in the movie – call all bikers and adventure enthusiasts. On this safari, you can dance a jig in the exact spot where Basanti was made to dance on glass and climb the boulders where Gabbar used to make his throne. If you want to re-enact a scene or two, no one will judge you!

Learning to direct and act

Bangalore has a thriving art scene, and there are many art theatres which offer voluntary programmes where you can learn acting, directing, and all the other nuances of the drama world. Ranga Shankara for instance has a yearly volunteer program in November for upcoming actors and drama lovers. And so does theatre society Dramanon. So, if the stage and the spotlight are your dreams, this is a perfect way to achieve them.

Booze and Brains at Opus

A Bangalore tradition, the Opus Bar on Sankey Road has Quiz Nights on Wednesdays. The twist here is that the quiz happens only after a couple of rounds of drinks. That is pressure of different kind, don’t you think? And the table with the most right answers gets free gifts (like a bottle of Scotch perhaps?). In between the questions and the drinking, you have music and dance and the MC at the bar is quick witted and fun.

Hop on to local trains

Bangalore has many local trains that no one has ever heard of. You hear so much of Mumbai’s locals, but if you take the 7:15 from Bangalore City Station to a small stop called Carmelaram, you can have an even better experience. This part of the city has an old history, and if you walk down the road now, you can see many Old Catholic houses where novitiates of various orders used to live.

The city of Bangalore has these and many other secrets up its sleeve, and all you have to do is download mobile app to know more of them to explore!
