The Right Dress For The Right Party: A Lady’s Guide To New Year’s Eve

New Year’s Eve should be a time of parties and celebrations, and part of the experience is wearing the right clothes to have a good time. Many of the events will have different levels of dress codes and the type of event should dictate what you plan to wear for your night out. It is important that you communicate with your date about where you are going to go and what you are going to be doing so that you are able to make your clothing choices in advance so you are prepared to have an excellent night out. Typically there are three types of events that you need to be ready for.

Laid Back

In Dallas there is no shortage of laid back parties to celebrate New Year’s Eve. These parties are usually held in a bar or a club and it is expected that you will spend most of your time drinking and dancing. You can go one of two ways with this type of party. If you have club clothes, this is the time to bust them out, but if you want to be more comfortable you can attend these parties wearing a nice pair of jeans and a shirt. Most of the time it is advisable to wear tennis shoes or flats to a laid back party so you can spend all of your time on your feet and not suffer from foot pain.

Semi-Formal

If you work in a professional environment you have probably been exposed to semi-formal events on a regular basis. These events are similar to after dinner drinks or cocktail parties that are the norm in American business, and you should approach your attire for the party in the same way that you would a business dinner. Your best friend for this situation is your little black dress, and if you do not have one, then a nice cocktail dress will suffice. It is ok for the hemline to be a little short, but you do not want it to be so short that it is scandalous. A good rule of thumb is to wear a dress that goes to slightly below mid-thigh, but wearing a floor length dress to this kind of event is not advisable. Most of the semi-formal events will have dancing, but it will be slower and more structured than a laid back event, so wearing heels is not going to keep you from having a good time.

Formal

Outside of your prom or college formals you might not have experienced a formal night out; however, these parties are a tremendous amount of fun. You may want to splurge and have your hair and nails done before the party, as you are going to be dressing in some of the nicest clothes that you own. For the most part, cocktail dresses are not a good choice for formal events, as the hemline is far too high. This is where you should plan to wear a floor length evening gown. There are dozens of styles that you can wear, some with slits that go up high on the thigh or gowns without a back. As long as you feel comfortable in the dress and you are able to keep a level of modesty it does not matter what style you go with. A formal event will have plenty of time to sit and talk with your date, so wearing your best high heels is ideal for this situation.

A lady has many choices to make when she wants to go out on New Year’s Eve, and it is vital that you understand what kind of party you are going to before you leave your house. There are some parties that border between the semi-formal and formal, like Murder Mystery Texas, but you should go ahead and take the opportunity to dress as nice as you can and lean towards the formal.
