Summer 2014: Best Travel Destinations

Last updated on May 21, 2014

The summer months are almost upon us and, as a consequence, so too is the holiday season. While the traditional tourist favourites such as Spain, Greece, the Balearic Islands and the Canaries remain ever popular, other destinations which may have been previously overlooked are predicted to make an impact this year. From short-haul to long-haul, these new travel hotspots could well be the places to be seen this summer.

Brazil

The eyes of the world will be on the country of Brazil this summer as it hosts the football World Cup. While thousands of fans will have already secured their tickets to football’s greatest extravaganza, many more people will be travelling to Brazil to explore the relatively undiscovered parts of the country. The state of Alagoas lies on the north-east coast of the country and is home to a delightful array of stunning secluded beaches and rustic little towns. The state capital of Maceio is a large tourist-centric city which still manages to retain a certain charm and beauty despite its size.

Kolkata, India

Recent major development in the city of Kolkata is testament to the fact that this is one destination in India determined to capitalise on its potential as a travel hotspot. The airport here has recently expanded with the addition of a new terminal, while a luxury shopping mall has also made its debut. In addition, there are plans to extend the city underground system. Despite the increasingly modern touch being applied to the city, Kolkata still retains much of its historic legacy. The Victoria Memorial, St Paul’s Cathedral and Mother Teresa’s former house are all tourist favourites.

Macedonia

The small country of Macedonia has masses of appeal as a holiday destination but, due to its fairly close proximity to Greece, is often overlooked. However, visitor numbers are now beginning to grow, with people finally discovering the picturesque beauty of this former state of Yugoslavia. With gleaming lakes, rolling mountains, sleepy stone villages and remote monasteries, Macedonia is a perfect retreat for those who just wish to relax.

Cape Town, South Africa

The most popular tourist destination in South Africa, Cape Town is growing rapidly as a travel hotspot for people from the UK. The major benefit of this amazing city is its wonderful all-year round climate, which makes it more than just a summer destination. With the iconic Table Mountain keeping a watchful eye over the city, stunning scenery is assured. Throw in a glorious coastline, some fantastic shopping, a variety of museums and the fascinating Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned and you have a highly desirable holiday destination that is not quite as expensive as it once was.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

If you have ever seen an episode of the smash-hit television series Game of Thrones, then it is likely you will already be familiar with Dubrovnik without realising it. The ancient walled city is where many of the scenes from the programme are filmed and this increased exposure has seen Dubrovnik rocket up the travel charts. Sitting on the shores of the sparkling waters of the Adriatic Sea and with a number of wonderful beaches nearby, Croatia’s number one tourist spot makes for an ideal summer holiday destination that you may not have considered before.

The summer travel landscape is changing. Although traditional destinations are still at the top of the popularity pile, a number of new challengers are throwing their hat into the ring. This battle for tourist numbers can only mean good news for the holidaymaker.
