Things to consider when designing a logo

Last updated on June 13, 2014

One of the most important things that a company can develop and embrace is a solid brand identity. Customers want to be able to trust the companies they buy products from, and they want to know what to expect in every interaction. Establishing brand identity can lead to credibility and a solid reputation in the marketplace. What some businesses fail to recognize is the importance of establishing their brand and being consistent with it. One of the first things they can do is establish a logo that succinctly communicates what they offer and what they stand for as a company. Here are some things to consider as you develop a logo for your company.

Make It Memorable

In this day and age, there are so many companies offering products and services that the marketplace has become over saturated with options for consumers. With the addition of online commerce, potential customers have seemingly innumerable options in terms of companies they can purchase from. Customers see so many logos and advertisements on a daily basis that they can all seem to run together. The goal with logo design is to establish a look that is interesting and memorable; that will cause customers to pause a bit and take a second look.

Make It Representative

Along with making it memorable, it is important to balance the task of keeping your logo representative of your company and what you offer. You can design a very interesting and compelling logo, but if potential customers can’t associate it with your brand, it doesn’t do you much good. Think of the interesting and unique aspects of your company and try to convey those things in your logo design. This can be tricky and will take some time to brainstorm, but as you have a goal of making your logo stand out and of representing your company’s best attributes, a great logo that helps establish your brand identity can be achieved.

Do Your Research

As you begin to think of concepts for your company’s logo and brand identity, it is important to conduct some research. Look at how other companies have positioned their brands and how their logos play into that. It’s especially important to look at your competitors to see what they are up to, and how you might be able to uniquely position your company in a niche that they have perhaps left open.

Color Palette

One thing that many companies underestimate about their brand identity and their logo is the color palette. There is great power in the colors you choose. These colors will ultimately appear on everything from your logo to your product packaging. The right color palette can be extremely powerful in terms of customer engagement and ultimately conversion. Different companies will choose different color palettes to represent themselves. Just make sure it will resonate with your target market.
