How to Wear Abayas in Style

Abaya is a garment much in demand from modern Muslim women. Hijab is  a head scarf that is often combined with the Abaya. Transformation in Hijab fashions have impacted Abaya designs and styling. Both provide a modest and chic look.

  • For keeping things simple, go in for bold and dark tones of Abayas. These provide a chic and elegant
  • Go colorful by reflecting the energy of the spring and summer. Wear a complementary pair of shoes and suitable sunglasses. Black shoes will complement all outfits.
  • Keep a balance: Do not mix up styles. For example, if your abaya is dark and plain, a neon colored glowing scarf will not be a good choice. Go in for subtle colors like pink, dark, pastels  One can also go in for a bold look like mixing and matching red hijab, red shoes, red purse etc with a fashionable abaya.
  • Jewelry with Abaya:

Abayas can be complemented d by some pieces of jewelry like necklaces and brooches. Fashion experts recommend choosing jewelry that contrasts with your outfit- the abaya. For instance, if your are dressed up in an Abaya with dark tones, one should go in for colors that will contrast with it. This contrast styling also applies to abayas with bright color. But in case you want to wear a jewelry piece like a brooch with your scarf or shawl, then you can select jewelry  that harmonizes with the  design and color of your abaya.

  • Buttons galore:

A huge difference can be made by  decorating your abayas with buttons. Particularly, simple  and plain buttons without exaggeration and fancy details can provide a very elegant look. The overall ideal must be to achieve a look of modesty.

  • All Abayas , whether closed front or open front, need something to be worn underneath. You can choose to wear beneath your abaya, something practical or comfortable. Go in for breezy and light materials as they will not be visible to most people. Your choice might vary from leggings to pajamas to jeans.
  • It is vital to take adequate care of your Abaya. Wash it in a particular way which will prevent their fading. This garment can be cleaned either by machine wash or hand wash. For machine wash, it must be turned inside out in a delicate cold water cycle using a laundry, mesh bag. But most experts recommend that the Abaya must be hand washed using special shampoo. Such shampoos are mostly available in the Middle East.
  • If you cannot access such shampoo, a baby shampoo will be  a good substitute. After washing, just air dry the garment. Steer clear of dryers. But if your Abaya is extra special, with  hand embroidery or bead work, it is good to get it dry-cleaned.
  • Traditionally Abayas were only in black and covered the whole body from head to toe. Today, designer abayas are paired with head scarves called as Hijab or Shayla. The latter may be decorated with lace or crystals.
