3 Ways to Prepare Your Skin for Summer Stressors

Summertime is here, which means it’s time to retire your jackets and sweatpants in exchange for bathing suits and shorts. You’re likely preparing to open the windows and spend more time outside in the sun. You might be ready to hit the beach for a day of swimming and relaxing. Or maybe you’re planning to gather your friends for an outdoor picnic or BBQ.

These are all some of the blissful, enjoyable moments everyone craves when warm weather arrives. And although you’re ready for summer, your skin may not be prepared for the additional time in the sun. No matter where you live, even the temperature change can be detrimental to your skin. That is, without the right precautions. Read ahead for three ways to prepare your skin for summer stressors.

1. Be Adamant About Sun Protection

The sun is powerful — way more than we may believe it to be. Even if it seems cloudy out, it’s imperative to wear sunscreen. In addition to a potential sunburn, the sun’s rays increase signs of aging and raise your risk for skin cancer. The more time you spend in the sun unprotected, the more likely you will experience these side effects.

Apply sunscreen throughout the day to your face, hands, and exposed skin areas. If you are going to be outside or at the beach, be thorough with your application. You will want to take even more precautions if you are on prescription acne treatment. Certain prescriptions — such as antibiotics, retinoids, and spironolactone — may make skin more photosensitive. This can lead to getting burns faster and easier, so you’ll want to be extra precautious.

Even if you are indoors, you may want to slather on some sunscreen. If you are working by a window, for example, the sun’s rays can still be damaging to your skin. The same goes for when you are driving in a car. In addition to sunscreen, SPF clothing is another option for protection. Many brands today are making clothing that is stylish and sun-protective — a win-win!

2. Stay Hydrated

Did you know that if you are thirsty then you are already dehydrated? Thirst is a sign that your body needs more fluids. Being dehydrated can lead to unpleasant symptoms such as dizziness, headache, fatigue, and possibly fainting. And for the skin, dehydration may result in itchiness, discoloration, fine lines, and dullness. Well-hydrated skin is full of moisture, giving you a glowing appearance rather than a tired or aged one.

The obvious way to stay hydrated is to drink water. During the summer months, you may need to drink more water than normal especially when you’re outdoors or more active. A good rule of thumb is to drink at least half of your body’s weight in ounces. Be sure to stick with water rather than coffee, tea, or alcohol which can only worsen dehydration. You might also opt for hydrating foods such as cucumbers, watermelons, celery, and strawberries for an added boost.

If you’re traveling or going on a day trip, consider adding electrolytes to your water. These help to replenish the body’s electrolytes that are oftentimes lost when we sweat. They typically come in small, handy packets that can be added to your water bottle. Be sure the brand you buy isn’t loaded with sugars which may leave you feeling less restored and more fatigued.

3. Be a Skincare Minimalist

Just like wearing fewer clothes in the summer, you should also put less on your skin during this time. Being a skincare minimalist means paring back on your morning and nighttime skin routine. During the winter, you likely lather up your skin with moisturizers to prevent dryness and chapped skin. In the summertime, it’s best to use products that are lighter in touch and feel.

If you typically use an oil-based cleanser, try a foaming one during the summertime. Or if you generally use a thick moisturizer, find a lighter one that also includes an SPF. Of course, you should also apply sunscreen in addition to this since most face products contain smaller doses of protection. Consider adding a Vitamin C serum to your routine to benefit dry skin that’s been in the sun too long. It will further enrich and protect your skin, giving you a smooth appearance.

With thousands of brands promoting their cleansers and moisturizers, it can be a bit overwhelming. The key to selecting products is to do your research. And don’t choose products based on what works for your friend. Everyone has a different skin microbiome and what works for her may not be best for you.

Takeaways

Summertime is meant to be enjoyed. Don’t be discouraged or disappointed if your skin takes a little time to adjust to the warmer weather. Just remember to give it some extra love and care. After all, your skin protects your body in so many ways throughout the year, so it deserves the TLC.

Be sure to always use sun protection, whether that is sunscreen or SPF clothing. Remember to stay hydrated and keep drinking water throughout the day. Lastly, try some new skin products to give your skin what it is craving during this time. With these tips in mind, you and your skin will welcome summer with open arms.
