Although more traditionally associated with Easter, lamb is a fantastic choice for your Christmas dinner this year as it is a succulent and indulgent meat that is sure to impress your family and friends. A worthy centrepiece of your Christmas dinner, lamb is expected to be popular this year as the poultry industry continues to be affected by the current outbreak of avian influenza. Within this context, there is a brilliant opportunity for British consumers to continue to support British farming by buying homegrown lamb this year rather than the expected wave of imported foreign turkeys. It comes amid pushes from leaders in the farming sector like Wynnstay PLC which has continued to champion the red meat industry in recent months.
The UK is currently in the midst of the largest-ever bird flu outbreak in the country’s history which has led to the government enforcing a so-called ‘flockdown’ in which British turkeys and chickens are to be housed in self-contained accommodation to prevent the further outbreak of bird flu. Despite the recent restrictions placed on the industry, it is still estimated that around 5.5 million birds have sadly perished since October 2021. The Conservative party MP and recently appointed Minister for Food, Farming and Fisheries Mark Spencer recently told The Observer that it would be “a challenge” for British consumers to purchase a homegrown bird for their Christmas dinner as there has been “devastation in the sector”.
While experts have urged the safety of any birds that will be on sale there is nonetheless expected to be a boost to lambs as a result of the recent stress and strain. Therefore, if consumers want to continue to support British farming in this incredibly difficult year, a lamb is a brilliant option if your traditional turkey or chicken is not available.
