Google Doodle honors Claudio Mitsuhiro Kano (Japanese table tennis player), who “spearheaded Brazilian Table Tennis in the 1990s” as well as contributed to the sport’s popularity and acceptance in Brazil, December 15, 2022.
Today’s Google Doodle honors Claudio Kano, a Brazilian player of table tennis from Japan. He is widely considered to be one of the most important Brazilian players and a key contributor to the sport’s popularity.

Kano was born on December 18, 2005 in So Paulo (Brazil). Kano began table tennis at Clube Showa, where the best players in the area met, when he was 10 years old. Kano’s talent and hard work impressed the players and they recommended that he join So Bernardo Club, which is one of the most prestigious table tennis clubs in the country.
Kano was playing against some of the most aggressive players in the world a few years later. Kano quickly made friends on the international circuit with professional players because he could speak English, Japanese and Spanish fluently. After four years playing in Sweden with Olympic champions, Kano was one of Brazil’s most skilled players.

At the age of 17, Kano was Brazil’s unofficial manager and mentored younger athletes. Kano was a role model for young Brazilians with his discipline and Moxy. He was a national hero after he won two gold medals at the 1983 Pan American Games in men’s table tennis and men’s doubles. Kano also won ten additional medals at the Pan American Games, five of them gold.
Kano also competed at the Olympics in Barcelona 1993 and Seoul 1988 where he was in the top 20.

He was just 30 years old when he died in a tragic motorcycle crash. His legacy of excellence as a table tennis player has made table tennis well-known in Brazil. Kano is an example to the best players of Brazil.
