Statistics (I love statistics), tell us that just over half of men propose to their partners on February 14th. There must be something romantic about that date, I don’t know.
Anyway, if you’re looking for the perfect place to pop the question to your beloved, let me suggest the United States – it offers reams of suitable locations to do it. Here are some of the best – some of them tinged with familiarity, some which may strike you as quite original, I like to think!
Las Vegas
It’s tricky to get excited about romance in Las Vegas – although it’s such a fun place, it never exactly rings with authenticity. But one good idea is to take a night-time helicopter ride over the Strip – seeing the lights from above is a magical experience, and once you’re up there at peace, it’s a pretty good place to propose. Plus – assuming she (or he) says yes, you can seal the deal within hours, given the proliferation of wedding chapels in the area. And if you wake up next morning realising it was all a terrible mistake , Nevada is also one of the most easy places to get a quickie divorce. So Vegas has got it all baby!
Arizona
Arizona’s a pretty empty state. There’s not much to do except stare wistfully at the horizon that stretches out to oblivion, and talk to each other about your deepest emotions. Many holiday-makers choose to stay at a ranch, which offers manifold opportunities to put a ring on her finger but one of the best must be walking, or pony-trekking, through a meadow of wildflowers at sunset, fireflies just starting to appear. Romance doesn’t get much more perfect than this.
Hawaii
Take your pick from hundreds of beaches and waterfalls on the Hawaiian islands to pop the question. A particularly nice touch I’ve heard of is to write your message, such as “Marry me”, into the sand and have your partner see it just before the tide washes it away.
New York
Getting engaged in New York is a piece of cake – just the very act of taking the missus over there for a holiday should already make her feel incredibly well-disposed towards you, so when you do get around to bringing out the ring, you can expect a positive response. May I suggest as the perfect moment during a wintery horse-drawn carriage ride through Central Park? Perhaps comfortably ensconced in warm blankets with a chilled glass of champagne in hand.
Verona
Verona, of course, was the home of those star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet. “But that’s in Italy!” I hear you cry. Well yes, it is, but there are also three Veronas in America, in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. None of them, admittedly, have the same cachet, but it’s a thought anyway.
Napa Valley
Wine country. Rolling hills. Fine dining. Delicious aromas. Spas everywhere you look. Say no more.
Niagara Falls
Every year couples on USA tours get engaged at the Bridal Veil falls – the dramatic sweep of water over some of the world’s largest falls is simply jaw-dropping. If you then top it off with a proposal, expect a round of applause from onlookers.
North Little Rock Mill, Arkansas
This charming little building, constructed in the 1930s, is believed to be the last remaining structure used in one of the most romantic films ever made, Gone with the Wind. If your partner is a fan, this could be a wonderful spot to propose. And if they say no, at least you have the perfect response: “Frankly, my dear….”
Biog: Rob has proposed three times and never been accepted, possibly because at no point was he ever involved with the ladies in question.
