The banking sector has endured some stormy financial waters in the past few years, and there is no doubt that finding a role within the industry is more difficult than it used to be. However, restructuring and a recovering economy means renewed optimism, with jobs in the sector on the rise once more. So now is the perfect time to search for a new role. Read on to find out how best to approach it.
Plan a Strategy
If you’re stagnating, trying to re-enter the industry, or want to move up, then you’ll need to have a plan of action. This should include identifying your goals and target positions, preparing for job interviews with companies and recruiters, and handling the interview and recruitment process. Approach job hunting as a strategic project and you’ll increase your chances of success.
Update your CV
Remember that if it’s a long time since you’ve applied for any positions your CV could be outdated and old fashioned, as CV fashion changes all the time. So starting from scratch might be a better idea than an update. Try and avoid meaningless phrases such as ‘ambitious and hard working,’ and instead aim to craft a CV that carries an implicit overall message as to your suitability. Include an ‘executive summary’ which highlights your major achievements to date, and don’t forget your CV is a sales tool – so always avoid modesty.
Update your Skills
Technological developments have advanced to the extent that it’s now very easy to be left behind – and if your tech skills aren’t up to scratch then you’ll struggle. The same goes for any other skills relevant to your industry, so work on improving them to avoid being passed over for a role you’re otherwise qualified for.
Network
Don’t underestimate the power of networking. In many cases, who you know is likely to yield positive results when it comes to seeking a new position. So build relationships with other finance industry professionals with genuine commitment, and don’t be seen as simply ‘using’ people for results.
Approach Recruitment Companies
Recruitment consultants are invaluable allies in the search for a finance role. However, be prepared before arranging to meet with them, and be very clear about what you want. Executive finance recruiters veritasexecutive recommends being as open and honest as possible about your career ambitions, in order to place you in a suitable role. Build a relationship with your recruiter, but remember to present a professional image at all times. They are looking for only the best for their clients.
Interview Training
If you’re not confident about your interview performance, consider interview training to hone your interview skills. Coaching in how to handle executive interview techniques can be an invaluable investment in your career. Alternatively, have fully prepared answers to likely questions, and remain focused on the value you’ll bring to a firm, particularly in the case of unstructured questions such as ‘ Tell me about yourself.’
