1.) The Monuments Men
This epic historical retelling hits theaters on February 7, 2014. The story centers around a World War Two army platoon commissioned with the task of saving some of Europe’s most valuable art in the midst of the Nazis’ impending advances. The film tells the story of “civilians willing to risk everything in the name of art.” Directed by George Clooney, the film stars Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray, John Goodman, Jean Dujardin, Bob Balaban, Hugh Bonneville, and Cate Blanchett. It’s based on the book The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel, which recounts the story of the Monuments, Fine Arts, and Archives program. While the film mostly centers around the men involved in the heroic rescues, women also played an equally important part in saving iconic pieces of art.
Who Should See It: Anyone who enjoys epic films such as “Saving Private Ryan,” historical buffs who enjoy learning about obscure historical events, and everyday people who want to be empowered by a good story.
2.) The Amazing Spider-Man 2
Director Mark Webb’s re-envisioning of Spider-Man will swing into theaters on May 2, 2014. In the sequel, Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield) must face a slew of villains that the mysterious company Oscorp sends to fight him. Jamie Foxx plays Max Dillon, an electrical engineer at Oscorp Industries who obtains Spider-Man’s powers through an accident involving electric eels. He then becomes a villain whom Spider-Man must fight against. The film’s other villain is called the Rhino (Paul Giamatti), a Russian mobster in a very sharp suit. As in the first film, the sequel focuses on Peter’s relationship with his girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) as well as his aunt May (Sally Field.) This sequel promises to pack as much action, excitement, and heart into it as the first. The first trailer is available during the Super Bowl!
Who Should See It: Anyone who loves the Marvel universe, Spider-Man fans everywhere, people who enjoy fast-paced action films, and anyone who has a crush on Emma Stone.
3.) Interstellar
This is Christopher Nolan’s first original film since finishing the Dark Knight Trilogy. As a result, there’s plenty of hype and excitement surrounding the film. Set in the near-future, the film explores a world where overpopulation and changing climates have turned earth into a wasteland without enough food or water for everyone. A group of researchers, scientists, and explorers begin a journey through an interstellar wormhole to save humanity on a mysterious mission. Based on the research of theoretical physicist Kip Thorne, Jonathan Nolan and Christopher Nolan’s screenplay explores man’s ability to survive in a changing cosmos. It’s not out until November 7, 2014, which means we’ll have to wait to see it. But with an all-star cast of Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Matt Damon, Topher Grace, Casey Affleck, John Lithgow, Wes Bentley, and Michael Caine, this movie promises to be worth the wait.
Who Should See It: Anyone who loves action or fantasy movies, anyone who loves time travel movies, and anyone who loves Christopher Nolan’s movies (and let’s be honest—don’t we all?) Plus, TIME magazine put it on a list of the top movies to see in 2014. Isn’t that reason enough?
