Ousha Al Suwaidi – Google Doodle Celebrates

Google Doodle celebrates Ousha Bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi (`عوشه بنت خليفة السويدي) Also called Fatat Al-Arab (Girl of the Arabs) and Ousha Al Sha’er (Ousha the Poet) Ousha the Poet, an UAE poet considered by many as being one of the best Nabati poets in the 20th century. She died on November 28th 2022.

Ousha Al-Suwaidi (Ousha the poet) was born in Al Ain and raised there before moving to the Emirate of Dubai later in her life.

She is widely regarded as one of the top Arabic Nabati poets as well as an important social figure. A number of her poems were sung by famous Emirati or Arab artists.

Her work has contributed to the development of Nabati poetry in the United Arab Emirates, particularly with young female poets.

Ousha Al Suwaidi’s work has been inspired by classic poets such as Al Mutannabi, Abu Tammam as well as Al Ma’ari, as well as other nearby Nabati poets like Al Majidi bin Thahir, Rashid Al Khalawi, Saleem bin Abdul Hai, and Mohsin Hazzani.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum who was the Crown Prince of Dubai at the time He dedicated a poem in his debut collection of poems to her on the 29th of September, 1989. In lieu of giving her the title “Fatat Al Khaleej,”” which translates to “Girl from the Gulf,” he gave her the name “Fatat Al Arab.”

Ousha Al Suwaidi, also known as “Fatat Al Arab,”” (or “The Girl from the Gulf,” was born in Al Ain on January 1 in 1920.

Ousha Al-Suwaidi (Ousha the poet) received national recognition for her powerful poetry performances at the age of 15 years old. The popularity in the career of Ousha Al Suwaidi within a genre dominated by men opened the door to the future generation of women poets.

She was awarded her the Abu Dhabi award, which was given to her by the Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Al Nahyan following her acceptance of the recognition during the 11th Sharjah Festival of Classic Poetry in 2010.

In 2011, an annual award that was given to women Emirati poets was created in her honor and a section named in her honour was dedicated for Dubai’s Women’s Museum.

The Dr. Rafia Ghubash, President of the Arabian Gulf University in Bahrain published a biography of Ousha. She was awarded her the Abu Dhabi Awards for her dedication to the university.

A lot of her poems, that focus on the themes of patriotism, love, wisdom and nostalgia were inspired through Nabati’s Arabian Gulf and desert landscapes. The poems, composed in Nabati discuss her personal experiences of living within the United Arab Emirates as well as the rich history and culture of the country.

Google Doodle Ousha Al Suwaidi (Ousha the Poet)

On the 28th of November 2022 Ousha Bint Khalifa Al Suwaidi, also called Ousha Al Suwaidi (Ousha the poet) will be recognized by the prestigious Google Doodle.

Ousha Al Suwaidi (Ousha the Poet) The Emirati poet’s Google Doodle was illustrated by guest artist Reem Al Mazrouei who is a resident of Abu Dhabi.

An eminent event was held to honor her contribution to literature on this day in the year 2011. The poems composed by Ousha Al Suwaidi’s honour were read out by prominent writers.

To honor Ousha Al Suwaidi’s memory The poetry community also established an annual award to women Emirati poets. A library located at the Emirates International School, and part in the Women’s Museum in Dubai, were also dedicated in her honour.

Ousha Al Suwaidi is renowned for her significant work which set the tone to Arab women poets. Many poets from her work have also been featured in the songs of well-known Emirati and Arab singers to the benefit of all people in the world.
