GST is an effort to replace all the indirect taxes imposed by State and Central Government. All the taxes that were previously levied on the common population of India such as VAT, Excise Duty, Customs Duty, have been subsumed under the GST.

Now the taxes that will be imposed are CGST, SGST, and IGST. However, there are still a lot of people that have yet not registered themselves under this law due to unawareness or lack of understanding regarding the registration process or the rules and regulations. Every citizen of India does not require to Register under the GST but only those who are dealing with the supply of goods and services that too under certain terms and conditions. Eligibility for GST Registration

Before you get registered under GST or in any scheme of GST, you should be aware of the eligibility criteria. Businesses whose annual turnover is above 20 lakhs or 10 lakhs are eligible to get registered under the new taxation law as they are considered to be the regular taxable person. In fact, those NRI taxable individuals who deal with the e-commerce or any kind of supply related to goods and services are eligible for GST registration process. Business entities for whom the registration is not mandatory. They can also get registered for the GST voluntarily. It is because registration under the process gains legal recognition as a supplier of goods and services and therefore, such suppliers can legally levy GST on customers who avail their services. The main benefit is that such suppliers are eligible for the ITC.

Process of GST Online Registration

There are several methods through which one can get registered under the GST. Either the taxable individuals can register themselves through Government portal or through the websites and GST registration portals made by GSPs and ASPs. In any which ways, most people choose the GSP and ASP online registration method due to its simplicity. The Government has appointed some organizations to simplify and ease the entire registration processes for the common population of the country. You can find several websites on the Internet from where you can easily register yourself under the GST. All you need to do is follow the step by step guidelines to completely and successfully register it.

  • Firstly, you need to login in any website by making an id and generating the password. Once you sign on the website you’ll be directed to three options: ‘Registration’, ‘Payments’ and ‘User Services’. Click on the registration and then select the new registration tab.
  • Secondly, you’ll be directed to a page in which you have to fill all the necessary details including your name, business, permanent address, phone number or whether you’re applying as a taxpayer or a GST practitioner.
  • On the basis of the type of business you are running, you’ll be asked to upload few documents.
  • After uploading those essential documents, you will have to fill the form B which requires some details to get successfully registered.
  • After filling the form B, you’ll get an application number via SMS or email which will then be verified by a GST officer where it could either be approved or asked for more documents.

In case, a trader is running his business in more than one State, then he needs to get registered for the GST separately.

Penalties for not Paying Tax Under GST

Offenders who forget, or didn’t pay taxes or fail to make the full payment will have to pay the penalty of 10% of the direct tax amount. The minimum amount of penalty has been kept as Rs.10, 000. If the case is related to deliberate tax evasions, they will have to pay 100% of the tax amount as a penalty.
