IELTS: All you need to know

IELTS- International English Language Testing System is an examination most students prepare for and take every year. The first reason is that English is a universal language, widely spoken and used in most schools, colleges, and universities. Beyond education, we use it in every industry to simplify functioning in everyday life.

Importance of IELTS

  • Inclusivity

English is an inclusive language because by learning a universal language that is widely spoken and written, individuals can come together. It is not a compulsion to learn the language but it is mandatory in some universities abroad. Let us consider the examination modules where candidates score according to their knowledge of the English language which will help them advance as a professional in whatever field of career they choose after their education is complete. Hence, it is inclusive and diverse and allows people to easily connect on common grounds.

  • Official recognition

Upon passing the IELTS examination, people can prove their proficiency in the language with the recognition certificate examination provides. It is one of the most important examinations required to qualify for some university job opportunities in professional positions.

  • Immigration

With globalization, the number of students moving abroad keeps on increasing, and there is a mandatory requirement for some English-speaking nations for these immigrants to have a complete understanding with comprehension skills of English. The immigration process becomes easy with an IELTS certificate.

Students are required by compulsion as per some school ERP to clear the IELTS exam when they connect with exchange programs.

  • Career opportunities

The world is known for currently speaking 6500 languages but English is relevant everywhere and would help people get job opportunities. Without knowing the language, people can’t connect with others. By scoring well in IELTS, people can qualify for prestigious positions.

Modules of the IELTS examination

  • General

Most immigration processes follow the general module. This is mostly for nonacademic reasons when people travel abroad and wish to live with their parent’s partners or have a work opportunity lined up. It is a standard of recruitment for most jobs available in English-speaking countries.

  • Academic

Students travel abroad and follow the academic module of IELTS when taking admission to colleges and universities. There are two parts of the examination written test and a speaking skill test that might be held on the same date or within seven days after the written examination. The duration of the written exam is 2 hours 45 minutes, divided into several groups according to question types. Once students clear this, it helps in their immigration and admission process.

Features of IELTS examinations

There are several levels of the exam depending on the requirement of an individual for the certificate. Mostly it includes;

  • Listening and comprehension skills
  • Speaking skills
  • Reading skills
  • Writing skills

Of all these, speaking skills are the most important. Students or individuals have a one-on-one interview that is almost like an interactive session. Depending on the module, students undergo multiple screening tests, but listening and speaking skill examinations are compulsory for all candidates. To prepare for this test, students can take help from multiple textbooks and PDFs available on ed-tech tools like ERP for schools

There are 9 levels of school from 0 to 9, 0 being the worst performance and 9 being the best. When students sit for different skill examinations, the marks are individually assigned and then rounded up to get the final score. The higher the score the more proficient a student is. Since there are no determined passing marks for the IELTS examinations universities set a cut-off or minimum score a student has to acquire for admission. candidates can attempt it multiple times and hold the most scored examination valid as proof of proficiency.

The United Kingdom has a cut-off of 6 and higher as a requirement for students from other countries to get admission to universities in the country. The United States, on the other hand, has a higher requirement at 7:00 and above.

Is IELTS compulsory?

It depends on why you need the score and certificate and the prescribed rules of the country you are immigrating in. Students have to give it compulsory if the university requires the same for other people opting for job opportunities abroad. Even if it is not mandatory we recommend scoring well because it helps students secure job placements in foreign countries.

English is an easy and difficult language at the same time. With practice and enough fluency, we all can score well in the IELTS examination.
