Last updated on May 4, 2022

Building your own home is an exciting time, as you get to realise your vision of what you want your home to look like. But with the excitement always comes the tedious task of deciding on furniture and fixtures to place in your home that will serve you for decades; one of these is a new boiler. Living in a location where the weather isn’t

ideal you’ll need heating, and choosing the right and suitable boiler for your home is crucial. Here are some of the things that you must look for when shopping for a new boiler.

Durability

If you spend thousands of pounds on a boiler system for your home, you have to make sure that every cent will be worth it and it should last 15 years and maybe even more with proper maintenance. You don’t want to dish out money for something that you have to replace in only a few years. Always check out the best boiler installation companies in the market before purchasing one to get your money’s worth. Read customer reviews of your target boiler to see if it’s any good.

Ask for an expert opinion

Ask a boiler engineer for advice, but take it with caution. A boiler engineer should be able to tell you without bias the best type and brand of a boiler that is most suitable for your home. He will consider your heating needs as well as your budget.

Type

There are three types of boilers: a heat-only, combination and system boilers and each of these have its own unique functions. A heat-only boiler, as its name suggests, means that you only have hot water stored in a tank for use in bathing, washing, etc. A combination boiler, or combi-boiler, heats water only when you need it, and no longer requires a tank to store hot water. A system boiler is much like a heat-only boiler. The only difference is that the system boiler comes with other components that the heat-only type doesn’t have. If you are building a small home and only you are living in it, a combi-boiler is most suitable as it is smaller and does not take up too much space. For a larger house, a heat-only boiler that comes equipped with a tank can be suitable.

Energy efficiency

A modern boiler is now more energy efficient than the old models and you’ll be able to save money on your energy bill if you opt for the latest boiler model. It may be more expensive than older models, but you will soon realise your savings in the long run, not to mention it is more environmentally friendly.

Boiler size

Take into consideration the number of people that will need heating in your home. If you have a large house and several members of the family, you will need a decent-sized boiler so it can provide the right amount of heating when required.

Ready to install your boiler? Make sure only to have a professional plumbing company do the job. Do not try to save money by paying for an inexperienced installer to do the job, because inevitably you will encounter problems with your boiler sooner rather than later. Boilers last for a decade and then some but you must also do your part in maintaining them so they don’t give out on you at the worst times.
